Malan Breton returns to LondonFashion Week with a dark counterpart collection Hades In Darkness. For SS18, Malan draws his inspiration from the Edwardian and Victorian era. Focusing on the magical darkness of this time and the comic book styled villains that roamed the shadows of this century.
These sinners are the engine that drive the story lines that have captured whole generations. With his master stroke, Malan sends modern athleisure silhouettes down the runway melded with classic tailoring of yesteryear and couture contours crafted at Lesage in Paris. Wire, bone, and rubber convey a story of modernism, sex, and sheer chaotic beauty. Moulin Rouge meets blade runner meets Camille.
Silk and tulles are transformed to give the illusion of wings whereas hand beading and Asian brocades rival these with other alchemist attributes from the underworld. Patterns are strong with Asian symbols derived from Malan's Taiwanese roots, alongside butterflies and mythological and beastly creatures.
Malan speaks of the collection and how it has been born with a "darker sexier air, with a twist, deconstructing what it is that drove these characters to darkness." The collection reflects both the character's aesthetic style and emotional profile. Because, after all what is fashion if not an extension of our personality?
